What Causes Trauma?
More than half of U.S. adults are exposed to a severe stressor at some point during the course of their life. You might experience traumatic stress in one of four ways:
Directly experiencing an event
Witnessing an event in person
Learning an event occurred to a close family member or friend.
Repeated exposure to aversive details of a traumatic event.
How Does Trauma Show Up?
Trauma can manifest in many ways, impacting your emotional, physical, and mental well-being. It may show up as heightened anxiety, difficulty trusting others, irritability, or feelings of numbness and detachment. Physically, you might experience fatigue, headaches, muscle tension, or digestive issues. Trauma can also influence behaviors, such as avoiding certain places, people, or activities, or feeling "stuck" in cycles of overthinking or self-doubt. Everyone processes trauma differently, and its effects can be subtle or overwhelming. Understanding how it shows up is the first step toward healing and reclaiming your sense of safety and self.
